The “Compress your OS drive” option only present as standard on the recent Windows 10 updates, without appearing on previous versions.
When you have done the disk cleanup with compression function, the cleaned disk space might be still unavailable. It seems to be bug. I have done that on my surface laptop. Then all Microsoft 365 app shows that new files were be uploaded and turns into a mirror. That also happen with the pictures folder of OneDrive. But they are just on my another Windows 7 computer.

The compression may turn your PC to run slower depend on its capabilities. Because every single file must be compressed.
